Things to Do Around Scotland Yards

Scotland Yards is a getaway destination but that doesn’t mean boring. What we’re known for – water, sandy beaches and nature. What that means: kayaking, beach-combing and swimming; bicycling, bird-watching and sunning on the sandy beaches; crabbing, fishing and bonfires on the beach – these are all steps away. Or, visit St. Mary’s City, the original capital of Maryland, walk the Solomon’s Island boardwalk, experience Patuxent River Air Museum and its flight simulators or engage with the Bay at the Calvert Marine Museum.  Bike to nearby Pt. Lookout State Park with its pier and lighthouse. Charter a boat to fish the Bay or take a historic watermen’s tour. There’s as much or as little as you want to do.

Point Lookout State Park

1.5 Miles

Recreational opportunities abound on this picturesque peninsula formed by the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. Swimming, fishing, boating and camping are just a few of the activities to be enjoyed in this beautiful bay setting. The ravages of time and nature have shorn Point Lookout of many vestiges of its history. There is nevertheless, much to see. The lighthouse, which is owned by the state, is still at the tip of the Point. The earth works of Fort Lincoln, a Civil War fortification, still exist on the river shore near Cornfield Harbor. The barracks, and officer quarters of the Fort and a portion of the prison pen, have been recreated by the Friends of Point Lookout and are the focus of Living History weekends each year.  Just 1.5 miles from Scotland Yards Beach Rentals.

Historic St. Mary’s City

11 Miles

Historic St. Mary’s City is located off Route 5 in scenic Southern Maryland. Travel time is approximately 1½ hours from Washington, D.C. and Annapolis and a little over 2 hours from Richmond and Baltimore. Take a step back in time to learn about St. Mary’s City. Board a tall ship, experience the 17th century or enjoy a walk along the plantations. Just 11 miles from Scotland Yards Beach Rentals.

Calvert County Marine Museum

Cruises

The museum operates two iconic Chesapeake Bay wooden work boats: the Wm. B. Tennison, a log-built bugeye, and the Dee of St. Mary’s, a sailing skipjack. Both vessels are Coast Guard certified to carry passengers.

The Tennison runs a regular schedule of public cruises from May through October. The Dee, which is primarily used for educational programs, also has public sails scheduled through the summer. Both are available for private charters.

For more information on schedules and charters head to the Calvert Museum’s “Cruises” page and select from the types of cruises available in the box to the left.

Solomons Island

27 Miles

Solomons is located at the southern tip of Calvert County,  It includes Solomons Island and mainland on the north side of the mouth of Patuxent River, where it meets the Chesapeake Bay. It is just across from the U.S. Patuxent River Naval Air Station; on the south side of the mouth of the Patuxent River.  Solomons is about a 40 minute drive from Scotland, making it a great location for a day trip to check out some of the attractions like the Calvert Marine Museum and Drum Point Lighthouse.  (shown above)
